Dermabrasion
What it is Dermabrasion?
There are several types of scars. Scars due to acne may be pitted (ice-pick type) or
scooped out (saucer-shaped). These are best treated by a procedure called dermabrasion,
in which the skin is frozen hard and "sanded" with a wire brush or diamond wheel. We do a
deeper dermabrasion than most plastic surgeons, so we can obtain 50% to 80% improvement.
Chemical peels and laser resurfacing are not deep enough to treat acne scars well. Even
dermabrasion must be combined with selective excision and/or injections of collagen
substance before and sometimes after the procedure for best results.
Special Procedures : Chemical Peels
Light (Refresher) Peel
The light peels are done with a solution called Jessner's, or low strength,
trichloracetic acid (TCA) and carry a very low risk of any side effects
with minimal "down-time." It is low cost and treats epidermal changes such
as pigmentation, skin texture, early sun damage, blackheads, oiliness, and dilated
pores. A mild burning is felt during the peel but no anesthesia is necessary, and
the sensation subsides before the patient leaves the office.
Medium (Triple) Peel
The medium depth peels are done with a combination of Jessner's solution,
TCA, and glycolic acid applied in various strengths and allowed to remain
on the face for various lengths of time depending on the desired depth of peel.
This peel is best for mild to moderate facial lines especially around the eyes,
blotchy pigmentation, rough texture and moderate sun damage.
